"I used to have a feeling that I had to spend a long time at the song, work at it til it got better, like building a house or something, you've got to spend loads of time doing it and putting in the foundations, but recently I discovered that the better songs I have written are the ones that come really fast, where I stop trying to be a songwriter, stop trying to be anything, and just live, experience and be free. When it comes, it calls and when I know there's a song coming out, there's a huge urge in me to just grab a guitar and write and a whole song could come out in 15 minutes."
-Damien.
How true. Damien Rice is really an epitome of how a true songwriter should be like. Spontaneous but sincere and truthful. And he is a great singer, theres this struggle and rawness when he sings that expresses so mucn emotion. its unbelievable what is in his mind. his lyrics are so simple yet complicated, the words coupled with simple guitar riffs, telling melodies and Lisa Hannigan's harmonising are so damn arresting, its like you're sucked into his thoughts and feelings when he is singing.
Even watching him perform on youtube touches me so much that i get goosebumps. and im not exaggerating. He is so real and sincere and emotional that you are compelled to admit that "yeah, i feel that way sometimes too." And the relevation scares and touches me, that sometimes i have the urge to even tear.
But thats what Damien's music is. It expresses feelings, thoughts and emotions that we sometimes cannot. But he does it for us through his music and i love love love him for that. No one could ever have the kind of impact and influence Damien Rice has on me, no one.
And he is not dead yet. Just spent these few days watching and reading about him, thought i should proclaim my love for him. hahaha.
ENJOY. He really makes you wanna cry.
Elephant
"When you think you're safe You fall upon your knees But you're still within your picture you still forget the breeze, and she may rise if I sing you down And she may wisely lay claim to the ground."
Rootless Tree (Piano Version)
"What I want from you is empty your head But they say be true, don't stay in your bed We do what we need to be free And it leans on me like a rootless tree .
What I want from us is emty our minds. But we fade the forests, fracture the tide We go blind when we needed to see And it leans on me, like a rootless..."
Yes i know, explicit language in chorus. But who cares, Damien makes it sound lyrical and tasteful. Haha.
